Triathalons:
Great for Florida Runners

The heat of summer presents a unique challenge to runners in Florida. But it can also be viewed as an opportunity. While running long distances during this time can be grueling, it is ideal to cross train and participate in sprint triathlons.

If your goal is simply to stay fit, enjoy exercising outdoors, or to finish your first triathlon, a good place to start is in the water. This is particularly true if you come from primarily a running back ground. Even if you can already swim a quarter mile without any training, try going a little further by practicing a mile or more continuously at least a few times in a pool. Experience in open water is great as well. There is a plethora of ideal lakes and beaches available in the Tampa/St Pete area, but if you go in open water bring a partner or swim in an area where there is supervision for safety.

If, however, your goal is to be competitive in triathlons during your off season from running, your primary focus should shift to the bike. Go to your local specialty bike shop. There you can find knowledgeable staff to help you find the bike that fits your specific needs. After that find a bike path and a partner or group to ride with if possible. Then, as many cyclists say, “Start logging miles in the saddle.”

Ideally to be competitive you’ll want to spend more time cycling than swimming or running, but you can’t ignore those areas either. Many triathletes will tell you the winners are not specialists, but instead best at swimming, biking and running. I agree, but with a twist-the winners are the best at swimming, biking, and running after getting off the bike. It is an important distinction, and you should train accordingly. Start getting in the mind set of cycling before most of your runs. Even if it is just a mile or two, it will help you get used to how your legs will feel during a triathlon.

In taking this approach to my summer training I have not only discovered a new passion in triathlons to which I have devoted my energy, but also an improvement in my running. It is my hope that many others can become similarly inspired during our difficult summer season.
